Poblenou is a sub-district of Sant Martí, and is known as the ‘Catalan Manchester’, with reference to the large industrial firms that have called the area home. In its early days, Poblenou was an industrial area lacking in the way of charm, boasting instead masses of industrial buildings. Today, however, it is a popular and modern area.
During the latter part of the 1900s, the area began to undergo a total transformation. As early as 1960, an overhaul began, providing Poblenou with a higher standard of living and better accommodation. With the 1992 Olympic Games, the 22@ plan began, bringing with it a complete revamp of the area.
Nowadays, Poblenou is an area full of surprises and beautiful architecture. Formerly abandoned industrial buildings have been transformed into housing, galleries, boutiques and business premises, and a number of art and design schools have also set down roots in the area. Poblenou is one of the quieter areas of Barcelona, offering plenty of greenery. It is also home to two of Barcelona’s best beaches, making it the perfect area for walks, sport, activities and swimming.
Poblenou is just 20minutes from Barcelona City, or 5minutes by metro. The area has good connections thanks to the metro, tram, and bus networks, making it easy to get around Barcelona.
