El Gòtic

El Gòtic is Barcelona’s oldest quarter, and reflects the city’s history, all the way back to its origins as a Roman village. Here you can find the most wonderful old buildings and monuments dating back as far as the 14th century, including parts of Barcelona’s old city wall. The heart of El Gòtic is also where you will find the renowned historic cathedral that attracts thousands of visitors from around the world.

El Gòtic is a labyrinthine area with winding pedestrian streets intersecting one another, giving the area a certain sense of calm, despite being a popular tourist destination at the very heart of Barcelona. Make sure to look up and around you whilst walking through the area, as details from Barcelona’s history can be found everywhere!

The district is a shopper’s paradise, with everything from tiny boutiques lining the narrow streets to big chain shops. Here you can find attractions such as Avinguda del Portal de l’Àngel, which is one of Barcelona’s most popular shopping streets.

El Gòtic has a wide assortment of bars and restaurants, from tiny holes in the wall offering mouth-watering homemade food to larger restaurants. One popular spot is the square Plaça Reial, where you can find a large number of restaurants and bars, in an area that is always full of life and movement, day and night.

Located close to El Gòtic is Las Ramblas – one of Barcelona’s most famous streets. This particular area is also home to the popular market La Boqueria, where you can find all kinds of incredibly fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables.

The area has good connections, with a choice of four different metro stations and plenty of bus lines passing through. El Gòtic is one of the most central districts of Barcelona, within walking distance of most parts of the city – the beach is just a short walk away, and Plaça de Catalunya is just around the corner.
